Full Time Job Summary: Performs medical laboratory testing and supervisory duties designated by the supervisor.
Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or in a related Biological/Chemical Science from an accredited college or university.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Must have passed national certification exam as a laboratory scientist that is accredited by an approved agency.
Work Experience: 1 year related experience with high complexity testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: PC Basic skills as needed to enter data and utilize computer efficiently.
Demonstrated skills in interpersonal relations, leadership, and communication.
Demonstrated organizational skills.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Receives and processes specimens, components and/or requisitions: Receives, prioritizes, and processes specimens in a timely manner to meet or exceed turnaround time standards.
Verifies specimen identification and labeling.
Determines if specimen is acceptable for analysis.
Identifies discrepancies, resolves, and documents for quality assurance.
Willingly assists other employees in the department during times of high volume testing.
BB Only: Determines if specimen collection is required.
Completes blood component transfusion utilization form.
Performs and documents blood component processing according to established procedures.
As requested, provides appropriate platelet and plasma components.
Documents special component needs in transfusion service information systems (TSIS).
Reviews and confirms recipient and donor information at the time of blood component issue.
Maintains adequate blood component inventory and uses the inventory effectively.
Performs testing according to established procedures: organizes work for maximum efficiency, maintaining efficiency during stressful situations.
Demonstrates knowledge of technical and instrumental procedures.
Performs testing according to established procedure.
Identifies absurd results and repeats tests as needed.
Maintains a clean, uncluttered work area.
Uses required personal protective equipment and physical barriers.
Works independently with minimal supervision and uses time efficiently when work is completed.
Reviews specimen logs for unreceived specimens.
BB Only: Performs patient and component testing according to established procedures.
Uses TSIS efficiently to record testing results and comments.
Reports accurate test results: records testing information accurately on logs or in the computer; any error would not significantly compromise patient care.
Recognizes reportable limits, critical values and instrument flags when reporting results.
Checks prior results, if available, when deciding acceptability of results.
Calls critical values to defined person immediately; documents call in the computer.
Uses LIS efficiently to order tests, enter results and obtain information.
Follows laboratory procedure when correcting results.
BB Only: accurately reports ABO and Rh types.
Accurately reports indirect and direct antiglobulin test interpretations.
Accurately reports cross match interpretations.
Performs quality control, equipment maintenance, and instrument calibration as defined: Performs routine instrument maintenance and quality control daily without supervision.
Recognizes problems, implements and documents corrective actions, and informs supervisor when appropriate.
Recognizes limitation and asks for help (and instruction) when necessary.
Performs calibration on most instruments.
Assumes responsibility for the management of the section in the absence of the supervisor: assist in managing the daily operation of the department as assigned.
Communicates necessary work related information to section personnel, other laboratory sections and laboratory management.
Works and communicates with other hospital staff to resolve problems.
Communicates necessary information to the supervisor.
Reviews testing results, quality control and equipment maintenance.
Manages the department, or section in the absence of the supervisor.
Aware of bench technologists technical needs, and offers assistance and offers help and training as needed.
Assists supervisor in major decision making process.
Supports and assists in implementation of changes in the department.
Writes technical procedure as needed.

Decision Making: Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.
